Visit Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Al-Fateh Fort, commonly known as Riffa Fort due to its location in Riffa, is a historic landmark and stands witness to one of the most important junctures in Bahrain’s history. Within its beautiful architecture lives the memory of the ruling family of Bahrain, the Al Khalifas.

It was built during the reign of Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh Al Khalifa in 1812. In the 19th century, the fort was a residence for Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh and then it was inherited by his grandchildren. Riffa Fort is now known as Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Fort and offers a splendid view across the Hunanaiya Valley. With Riffa being home to the seat of government until 1869, this fort is of considerable historical significance.

Sheikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, who ruled Bahrain from 1869 to 1932, was born in this fort. His house in Muharraq provides a glimpse of royal life in the 19th century, complete with architecture and wall carvings belonging to that era. It is also one of the best places to feel the effects of the wind tower.

A series of programs organized by the Ministry of Culture has brought life back to the fort and not only present a chronological history of the Al Khalifa family but showcase the interior space designed by the French firm, La Meduse and the local engineering firm, PAD, which took its inspiration from the fort’s history and people.

The fort also houses the Saffron Café, which overlooks the picturesque Al-Haniniya Valley, offering visitors the perfect ambiance created by the site’s history and environment.

The fort has a square ground plan with 2 circular and 2 rectangular towers at its corners, with the northeastern tower serving as a gate tower. Inside there are 3 courtyards.

At present Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh Fort is a tourist attraction. The fort itself can freely be visited during the daytime. The museum inside the fort will need a ticket for a fee but is also worth a visit. This is a very nice fort with several rooms with nice architectural details made out of gypsum.
